Description

The 2024 UK Quilts, Castles and Gardens tour will be led by Julie Clarke, designer and quilter. This 23-day tour will take you to the Festival of The Quilts in Birmingham, England. Besides sightseeing tours in London, Windsor and Bath, we will also visit major attractions in Wales, Ireland and Scotland. Visit the Royal School of Needlework, Fashion and Textile Museums, quilt shops and more on this trip through the scenic English countryside.

Itinerary

Depart Sydney to London via Doha on Qatar Airways in the evening and fly overnight.

Connect your Qatar Airways flight to London in the morning and arrive in London Heathrow Airport at noon. Upon arrival, you are met and transferred to hotel. Tour London by bus. Stop at various famous sights for photo ops including Parliament House, Tower Bridge, Trafalgar Square, Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, Horse Guards Parade, Pall Mall etc. In the afternoon there will be free time to explore the Victoria and Albert Museum, Harrods, Madame Tussauds should you choose to do so. Lunch will be at your own cost. Dinner at hotel or local restaurant. Stay overnight at a 4* hotel in London.

Today you will first visit the famous Hampton Court. Explore the Palace, the gardens, the maze, the tennis court, the kitchens etc. And then visit the Royal School of Needlework for some shopping. Take a short bus drive to Kew Gardens (only entrance cost included. Mini train fee will be at your own cost), followed by a visit to Tikki Patchwork. Have your dinner at hotel or local restaurant. Stay overnight at a 4* hotel in London. INCLUDED: entrance fee to the Hampton Court (visit to Royal School of Needlework functioning on donations), entrance fee to the Kew Gardens.

After breakfast, we will travel by coach to visit the largest castle in the world – Windsor Castle, which was the favoured residence of the Late Queen Elizabeth II. Afterwards, we will travel by coach to the historic city of Bath. Visit the Royal Crescent and the Circus, Queen Square, Abbey Churchyard, Abbey Green or the Cross Bath tucked away down Bath Street. Also visit the American Museum & Gardens or perhaps, the Fashion Museum, Pulteney Bridge and the Weir, along with the colourful Parade Gardens. If we still have energy, walk up Lansdown Hill and turn into Camden Crescent for some of the best views of Bath. Stay overnight in Bristol. Stay overnight at a 4* hotel in Bristol. Leave Bristol to visit Winchester Cathedral, where Jane Austen was buried, and afterwards proceed to Chawton to visit Jane Austen House. Today’s highlight is a visit to Highclere Castle, a stately home and Ancestral Seat of the Earls of Carnarvon. The castle has more than 200 rooms and stands on a tract of about 1,060 acres (430 hectares). It is most famous for being the main filmset of Downton Abbey (2010–15). We finish the day at Birmingham. After breakfast at the hotel, you will have a half day trip to Stratford-Upon-Avon, where you will visit the birthplace of William Shakespeare followed by a trip to Warwich Castle. After returning to Birmingham, you may either visit Day 2 of the Quilt Show or explore Birmingham on your own. You will have your dinner in your hotel. Stay overnight at a 4* hotel in Birmingham. After breakfast, travel toward Holihead, the largest town and a community in the county of Isle of Anglesey, Wales. Upon arriving in Caernarforn, our guide will take you through rugged dramatic scenery in some of the most remote parts of the UK, you will visit Caernarfon Castle- one of many Castles constructed in the 1200s by Edward “Longshanks” the First, the "Hammer of the Scots". Later, you will visit a quirky Victorian railway station with the longest name in the world! The highlight of the day will be a heritage steam train ride through the breathtaking countryside. Stay overnight at a 4* hotel in Holihead. INCLUDED: entrance fee to the Caernarforn castle and a ride with a steam train to Snowdown Mountain. Important: Steam Train ride has limited seats, and should be booked months in advance.

Today we cross the Irish sea to Dublin. It’s a small capital but renowned for its literary tradition and medieval, Georgian and modern architecture. Enjoy a tour of the cosmopolitan Irish capital, followed by free time to explore this 1000-year-old city yourself. From the city’s Viking past, its medieval castles and its cathedrals, to its many museums that illustrate the city’s more turbulent history- Dublin is big enough to keep you entertained but small enough to explore yourself. We begin our day by driving along O'Connell Street, a picturesque thoroughfare known for its Georgian architectural heritage. It is lined with statues; red brick townhouses adorn with multi-hued doors and wrought-iron decorated windows. Visit Oscar Wilde's Trinity College followed by St. Patrick's Cathedral. Kilkenny, with its medieval cobblestone streets and Old-World charm, is your first destination today. There will be time to stroll through pretty lanes with vibrantly painted houses and enjoy a morning coffee. The first of today's highlights is Blarney, famous for its Stone of Eloquence. There will be time to visit the castle and a local shop for Irish handicrafts and handmade crystals. If time permits, you will visit Blarney Woollen Mills. At Kenmare we walk upon stunning Ring of Kerry, a popular walking path for tourists, and stop for spectacular photos of the Lakes of Killarney before arriving in the popular resort town of Killarney. In the morning, we rise a horse-drawn cart along the shoreline for pictures of Ross Castle. We then drive to Adare, renowned as one of Ireland's prettiest towns. Its main street is punctuated with beautiful stone buildings and thatched cottages, medieval monasteries, ruins, and a picturesque village park. We finish the day Limerick and stay overnight at a 4* hotel in Limerick.

Breathtaking scenery awaits you today. Start with a visit to the spectacular 668-foot Cliffs of Moher and fantastic views over the Atlantic and Clare coast. Then, cross the limestone plateau of The Burren and stop in Galway, a popular seaside destination and a buzzing cosmopolitan district full of vibrant shops, and busy cafes and known for its bustling bar culture. Enjoy a leisurely morning in the capital city of Northern Ireland before boarding the ferry for the Irish Sea crossing to Cairnryan. On your way to Glasgow, stop in Alloway, the birthplace of Scottish poet Robert Burns. Stay overnight at a 4* hotel in Glasgow.

Follow the "Bonnie Banks" of Loch Lomond, and proceed via wild Rannoch Moor, Glen Coe, Fort William, beneath Ben Nevis and Fort Augustus. In the afternoon we arrive at Inverness. Be on the lookout for any signs of Nessie! Stay overnight at a 4* hotel in Inverness or nearby.

We begin the day with a visit to the Culloden Battlefield (on the way to Culloden Moor) where the Jacobite Rising, came to a tragic end with the death of the Bonnie Prince. Travel through the spectacular Cairngorms National Park to Pitlochry, a Victorian mountain resort set amongst a beautiful scenery.
