Itinerary

Depart Sydney to Kuala Lumpur, capital of Malaysia in the afternoon and arrive in the evening. Upon arrival, you are met and transferred to your hotel.

Breakfast at the hotel. Head to Eagle Square, one of the most famous landmarks in Langkawi. The 12-meter tall statue of a flying Eagle greets visitors who arrive on the island by ferry. The reddish-brown eagle at Dataran Lang was built as an emblem for the island. Follow your tour guide and visit Mahsuri Tomb. Listen to the tale of a young beautiful girl who was killed by villagers about 200 years ago because of her jealous mother-in-law, who created a false story about adultery. As a result, the village was cursed for 7 generations. Then an amazing not to be missed attraction in Langkawi is the cable car, which is included in this tour. At 709 meters above sea level, the cable car ride takes you up to Langkawi's second highest peak. During the 20-minute ride, you will pass over jungle waterfalls and a thick carpet of virgin rainforest. On a clear day, you can see parts of Thailand towards the north and Indonesia towards the south-west. Langkawi Underwater World is another interesting place to interact with a lot of interesting animals, birds, and reptiles. Lunch at a local restaurant. Breakfast at the hotel. Depart your journey towards Batu Caves, passing through Little India and the Brickfields neighborhood, known for its colorful streets and unique shops. After a 30-minute scenic drive, arrive at the Batu Caves to discover the home of Hindu shrines and various religious deities. Listen as your guide explains the Hindu roots of the nation and climb the 272 steps to the golden statue of Lord Murugan. Once at the top, go to Cathedral Cave to see the largest cave in the complex, and hear about the background to this most intricate of Hindu shrines. Lunch at a local restaurant. Then, drive to Thean Hou Temple, a 6-tiered pagoda temple atop Robson Heights. Completed in 1987 and officially opened in 1989, it was built by the Hainanese community of Kuala Lumpur and is dedicated to the goddess Tian Hou (The Heavenly Mother). Continue to China Town to enter the site of dozens of restaurants and food stalls tended by Chinese, Indian, Malay and Bangladeshi traders. Watch as they serve up local favorites, such as curry noodles, Hokkien mee (a Fujian noodle dish), ikan bakar (barbecued fish) and asam laksa (a sour, fish and tamarind-based soup). Next, see the stunning National Mosque of Malaysia (Masjid Negara), set in 13 acres of beautiful gardens. Transfer to visit to Wat Pra Singh or Monastery of the Lion Lord, founded in the 14 th century to house the ashes of King Kham Fu and serve as the principal religious center of the Lanna Kingdom. The complex is composed of several buildings of varying architectural and artistic merit that form the most famous temple in Chiang Mai. The lovely Viharn Lai Kham with gilded hall, decorated with murals of everyday life, houses the highly revered golden Phra Buddha Sihing image. Visit to Wat Chedi Luang or Temple of Big Stupa, dated back to the 14 th century. It took about 100 years to finish the construction of the stupa which was 82 m high and had a base diameter of 54 m and was at that time the largest building of all Lanna. It was here, where the Emerald Buddha was once enshrined in the eastern niche before it was moved to Luang Prabang. Lunch at local restaurant. Afternoon visit one of the highlights is a visit to the 600 year-old temple of Wat Pra That Doi Suthep, near the summit of Doi Suthep mountain. After a drive up the mountain’s winding road, the final climb to the site is via a magnificent Naga (dragon-headed serpent) staircase of 306 steps. Inside is an intriguing copper-plated chedi topped by a five-tier gold umbrella which contains partial relics of Lord Buddha. On a clear day, there are incomparable views over the city of Chiang Mai. Return to the hotel for freshening up. In evening, visit The Chiang Mai Night Bazaar, one of the main shopping venues in northern Thailand and is simply a can't-miss part of the whole Chiang Mai experience. It features street-side stalls selling mostly clothing and handicrafts, together with a host of shopping plazas where you can find more unique crafts and jewelry. Breakfast at the hotel. Transfer to Chiang Rai (190km). Stop at Wat Rong Khun or White temple designed and built by famous artist Chaloemchai Khositphiphat. A white ordination hall – Phra Ubosot - is decorated with silver glittering pieces of mirrors. There are large mural paintings of the Lord Buddha in different gestures. Drive to the Golden Triangle takes us to a hillside vantage point for a superb view of the point where the mountains of Laos, Myanmar ( Burma ), and Thailand merge. The vista also takes in the mighty Mekong River joining forces with the Ruak River. The tour speeds up a notch as we take an exhilarating ride in a long-tailed boat on the Mekong River to get closer to the territorial areas of Myanmar and Laos. We head to the ancient capital of Chiang Saen on the banks of this mighty waterway. Afterwards, we proceed to The Hall of Opium, a state-of-the-art 5,600 sq-metre museum with interactive displays, video and multi-media to give a haunting insight into the history of the drug trade, both past and present. This fascinating exhibition presenting the history of opium, its natural properties and its use dating back 5,000 years. The museum also provides a fascinating insight into opium prohibition, crime and conflict and the detrimental consequences of abusing drugs. Lunch at a local restaurant. Then transfer to Chiang Rai. Breakfast at the hotel. Today you will have another day to visit hill tribe villages and a tea plantation in Mae Salong from Chiang Rai. You will see Akha, Yao, Shan, Lahu and Lisu hill tribe villages. Learn about the traditional garments unique to each hill tribe, and become familiar with rural village life in northern Thailand. Walk along a gorgeous mountain trail near Mae Salong Sample the oolong teas at Choui Fong Tea plantation, relax and enjoy a magnificent landscape where you will experience the process of growing and harvesting tea as well as vegetation propagation to produce tea seedlings at the nursery, whilst teaching you how to pluck tea leaves and enjoy a cup of fresh- roasted tea. After breakfast, you are transferred to Chiang Rai airport for your flight to Bangkok. Upon arrival at Bangkok, you will drive to Kanchanaburi, where you will visit Hellfire Pass Museum. Hellfire Pass is by far the most impressive war memorial in Kanchanaburi. A walk through the Hellfire Pass is a moving experience that one will never forget. Then continue to drive to Krasae cave and a wooden railway bridge on the slope of a steep cliff with a nice view over the river. Next to the railway is the small Krasae Cave that is now a place of worship with a Buddha image. Stay overnight in Kanchanaburi.

After breakfast, visit Kanchanaburi’s most visited attraction, Bridge on the River Kwai, A bridge that is part of the infamous Death Railway, a strategic railway route to Myanmar constructed during the 2nd World War. If time permits, visit Don Rak War cemetery, A peaceful and well-maintained cemetery in downtown Kanchanaburi. Resting place of 6,982 Allied prisoners of war who perished during the construction of the “Death Railway” in the 2nd World War. Continue to The Jeath War Museum, this small museum displays photographs and illustrations narrating the living condition of prisoners of war. Afterwards, transferred to Bangkok airport for your flight home via Kuala Lumpur. Fly overnight.
